My Unexpected Journey (Day 6)
I would have to say that the biggest thing you deal with when facing cancer is fear. There is the fear of what will happen to my family, the fear of what I will go through, the fear of what my wife will have to endure, and the list goes on. I must admit when I was given the news by the doctor, fear got a grip on me like I had never experienced before. But as I go through each day, I am pushing that fear aside and focusing on the promises of God and the incredible strength and faith of my wife. I am also feeling the incredible power of the praying that is being done on my behalf and it is truly inspiring to watch.
In Deuteronomy 30:19 God says 'I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live!' When you are faced with cancer you have a choice - either you choose to give up and let it defeat you, or you stand against the enemy and fight. I choose life and I choose to fight!
2 Timothy 1:7 says ‘For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mine.’ You need to shake off the fear and the negative thoughts and surround yourself in nothing but positive. Don’t listen to the odds the doctors give you and don’t listen to anyone who tells you you’ll never beat this. You will hear all the stories of those who lost their battle, but seek out the stories of those who beat it and learn what they did to win. There are cancer survivors everywhere. Just because you have cancer does not mean you can’t beat it. You must take action and decide that you are going to do everything in your power to live. Fear is mentioned over 200 times in the bible and most every time it is mentioned it’s telling you not to give into to it. My wife jotted these down for me on and index card to read as often as I need to:
(1) Fear is the faith of Satan.
(2) Deal with fear or it will deal with you.
(3) When fear comes up stand on God’s word.
(4) Guard your mind- don’t let fear in.
(5) The word of God is your vaccine against fear.
(6) What you meditate on in abundance will take over your life.
Romans 8:28 says ‘And we know that God works all things for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.’ I am standing on that firmly. Make no mistake, if I somehow lose my battle with cancer, I still win! To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. God’s ways are much higher than mine and He is working it out for the good of everyone involved. Jesus said “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going away to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.’
I have excepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, therefore death has no power over me. Like I said, I win! Now I fully understand that there are those who have joined this group that may not have the same faith as I do or may not have faith at all, but the principles still apply. You need to fight with everything you have if your going to win the battle. This applies to any battle you face in life. Deal with fear or it will grow and deal with you!
I love all of you and so does God, Billy
